Ram 1500 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Truck Comparison

Learn How the 2019 Ram 1500 Compares to its Chevy Competition

The half-ton truck segment is a mighty competitive one, with several worthy contenders vying for your hard-earned dollars. For the 2019 model year, both the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 have received significant updates, making these highly-respected models even more compelling. That being the case, we thought it would be a good idea to see how these two pickups compared with each other when placed in a head-to-head matchup where we assessed each truck on the merits that matter most to our Shakopee, Burnsville, Prior Lake, and Savage MN customers. Read on to see how things turned out.

The Ram 1500

Performance

  • 3.6-liter V6 engine with an eTorque mild hybrid system
  • 305 horsepower
  • 269 pound-feet of torque, with up to 90 pound-feet of supplemental torque
  • Eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Available 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine
  • Available 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine with eTorque mild hybrid system
  • Best-in-class maximum V8 towing capacity of 12,750 pounds
  • Available Active Level™ Four-Corner Air Suspension

While the Ram 1500 doesn’t boast as many available engines as the Chevy Silverado 1500, the engines that are offered for the Ram 1500 deliver the horsepower and low-end torque that you want. The Active Level Four-Corner Air Suspension is exclusively offered for the Ram 1500, helping to keep your payload level even on rough or twisting roads. The Ram 1500 also boasts the largest brakes in the class delivering the stopping power you need when you need it. The Ram 1500 Rebel trim features a specialized suspension and the off-roading features that make off-roading a sheer joy.

Standard Features

  • Uconnect infotainment system
  • Bluetooth® audio streaming
  • Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration
  • Class-exclusive RamBox® Cargo Management System
  • Rearview camera

Since we spend more and more time in our vehicles, it's nice to know that both pickups come nicely equipped -- even for the introductory models we compared here. One feature only offered for the Ram family of pickups is the available RamBox® Cargo Management System. This offers a secure, lit, drainable storage space for your essential supplies and tools.

Safety

  • Standard child safety locks
  • Standard brake assist
  • Standard backup camera
  • Available forward collision warning with advanced brake assist
  • Available blind spot monitoring with rear cross path and trailer detection

While both pickups come equipped with standard safety features like daytime running lights, traction control, and electronic stability control, the Ram 1500 includes more standard safety features than the Silverado 1500.

Trim Levels

  • Trim Levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited
  • Quad or Crew Cab bodies
  • Quad Cab models come with a 6'4" box bed
  • Crew Cab models get either a 5'7" or 6'4" bed

The Ram 1500 offers you the right amount of options when it comes to putting together your ideal pickup: enough to get what you want and need, but not so many that the process becomes overwhelming.

The Silverado 1500

Performance

  • 4.3-liter V6 engine
  • 285 horsepower
  • 305 pound feet of torque
  • Six-speed automatic transmission
  • Two available 5.3-liter V8 engines
  • Available 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine
  • Available 6.2-liter V8 engine
  • Max tow rating of 12,500 pounds

The Silverado 1500 LT Z71 Trail Boss is Chevrolet's attempt to match the off-road master Ram 1500 Rebel, but it comes at a higher MSRP than does the Rebel -- and it doesn’t have the reputation for durability and capability that the Rebel boasts.

Standard Features

  • MyLink infotainment system
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Tilt steering wheel
  • Folding rear seat
  • Power windows

It's noteworthy that, even though the base Silverado 1500 has the higher MSRP, the Ram 1500 includes more standard features on its introductory model. These include push-button start, an MP3 player and an auxiliary audio input, each of which requires moving up to a higher, more expensive trim level in the Silverado 1500.

Safety

  • Available front and rear park assist
  • Available side-view and hitch-view cameras
  • Available lane change alert with side blind zone alert
  • Available forward collision alert with low speed automatic braking
  • Available lane keep assist with lane departure warning

Much like the Ram 1500, the Chevy Silverado 1500 can be equipped with the kind of safety and driver-assistance features that help assure you as you're driving the local roads and highways. However, Chevy makes you pay more to add features to the Silverado 1500 that come standard on the Ram 1500, which we think is a bit unfair.

Trim Levels

  • Trim Levels: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country
  • Regular, Double, or Crew Cab bodies
  • All Cabs are available with a 6'6" box bed
  • Regular Cab models also come with an 8" box bed
  • Crew Cab models also come with a 5'8" box bed

While the 2019 Silverado 1500 has the greater number of trim levels, cab sizes, and bed lengths, compared to the Ram 1500, that just gives Chevrolet more opportunity to charge you more money for your truck -- which is tough when you consider that the base Silverado 1500 already costs more than the introductory Ram 1500
